The idea of the union of the ukrainian lands goes back centuries. It originates from the unification of ancient Russian lands around the princely throne in Kiev, and its philosophical roots originates from the time of Byzantium. Over the centuries, Ukrainian hetmans Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Ivan Vygovsky, Petro Doroshenko, Ivan Mazepa have been practicing it. In the XVIII century - at the beginning ХХ century, when the Ukrainian lands were divided between Poland, Russia, Romania, Austria-Hungary, this idea was reflected in the works of the best domestic thinkers, who noted that Ukraine needs territorial integrity to fight for its national interests.
The Ukrainian revolution of 1917-1920 made the dream of many generations of Ukrainians about unification into a single conciliar state a reality. January 22, 1918 The Central Council unveiled the Fourth Universal, which proclaimed the independence of Ukraine. A year later, on January 22, 1919, the Universal of the UNR Directorate appeared (better known as the Act of Union) on the reunification of the Ukrainian National Republic and the Western Ukrainian National Republic into a single Council Ukraine. January 24, 1919 a law was passed on the celebration of January 22 as the Independence Day of Ukraine. Since January 1999, this day has been officially celebrated as the Ukraine Unity Day.
Ukraine today, January 22, celebrates Ukraine Unity Day. On this day 101 years ago, the Act of Unification (the Act of Union) of the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) and the Western Ukrainian National Republic (ZUNR) was proclaimed. It took place on Sophia Square in Kiev.
Since 1990, Ukraine has an unofficial tradition of celebrating Union Day together by "living chain". On January 21, 1990, a “living chain” was organized between Kiev and Lviv, as a symbol of the spiritual unification of Ukrainian lands, and then annually by similar actions “unite” the Dnieper banks and other rivers in various cities of the country. Our students are actively joining this action.
On this day, the KCIBL library launched informative platforms, presentations, and exhibitions that will be visited not only by our students and teachers, but also by participants of the KCIBL Open Day.
